UCA Camp 2019

Day 1 Recap:

The members got settled into their rooms, and at 1PM entered into the world of UCA Cheer Camp! On Day 1, the athletes learned LOTS of material. No evaluations took place on Day One, as the UCA Staff focused on teaching material and technique.

All six stunt groups made it into Elite Stunt Class on Day One!! That means that all six stunt groups hit extended liberties, with a pop cradle. AWESOME JOB LADIES! This set the tone for the rest of camp! By being placed in the Elite stunting class, all six groups are learning new skills never taught before and most groups will be coming home with something new and amazing to show.

The night ended a little disheartened with the team not receiving a Spirit stick. However, we do have a lot of new members new to the Cheer Camp Lifestyle, and the returners were sure to bring more enthusiasm to Day 2 for the new athletes to follow.

Day 2 Recap:

Cheer Evaluations: Blue Superior Ribbon!

Spirit Stick!

Varsity Jump Off Winner: Taylor Witana

Room Decos Winners: Lainey Fitch & Kate Merrick (Theme: Rock N Roll), Second Place: Nova Warnstrom & Zuzanna Smoszna (In ’N’ Out)

Day 2 was filled with a lot of team WINS!! We started the morning off with prepping stunts and tumbling for the Cheer (that we had just learned on Day 1). We added in 4 standing back tucks, done by the WitanaLanas (AKA the Witana Sisters + Ilana Tenberg). For stunts, we worked on One Man Extensions and hitches to halves. After much work, the team performed and received a Superior Blue Ribbon.

After receiving the Blue Ribbon, the team worked on their Game Day Performance (will compete on Final Day), and got ready for the UCA Camp Jump OFF!!

We selected 5 members to be part of the UCA Camp JUMP OFF! The WitanaLanas and Lilia! All girls had amazing jumps, with most girls making it to FINALS.

In the Finals, Nikki Witana and Taylor Witana remained, amongst 3 other non-Westmont cheerleaders. In the end, Taylor took home the Best Jumper of UCA Camp!! She was deemed the best jumper out of all of camp (300+ athletes). She performed her double toe-touch, followed by front hurdler! Way to represent for Westmont!

FYI: This is the second year in a row that Westmont took home Best Varsity Jumper of UCA Camp!!

The girls went back to the dorms also with the Spirit Stick! Their enthusiasm and spirit was much better on Day 2.

Coaches and Captains awarded the Spirit Stick to Jenny George! We also awarded the Cheer Blue Ribbon to Nadine Colombo. Both athletes showed amazing skills, maturity and overall positive cheerleading attitudes at Cheer Camp, thus far. Congrats, Jenny and Nadine!

The night ended with Room Decoration competition. There were many original ideas, including the Camping Room (Ashley/Taylor) and The Halloween/Cemetery Room (Mia/Mad/Angelina/Ahra). However the clear standouts were In N Out (Nova/Zuzanna) and the Rock N Roll Room (Lainey/Kate). Lainey and Kate took home the 1st place prize in the end. So cute and original! They even made matching rock t-shirts.

Day 3 Recap:

Rally Evaluations: Blue Superior Ribbon!

Spirit Stick!

All-American JV Cheerleaders: Nova Warnstrom, Madison Yazalina, Nikki Witana

All-American Varsity Cheerleaders: Mia Davis (All 4 years!), Angelina Prospal, Kaylee Witana

Day 3 started off a bit stressful, as our UCA Camp Instructor decided to give us a completely new pyramid. He told us his ideas the night before, but the team didn’t start working on the elements Day 3 morning. Us coaches started the team on the elements first thing in the morning, right at 8:30AM. The team was able to put most of the new elements together by 9AM, and we showed our UCA Instructor, Jordan. He seemed pleased. By 10:30AM, when he worked with us again, he decided to add more twists and flips and sped up the counts for us. Never a dull moment. We deemed Day 3 as The Jordan Challenge! We were going to be evaluated right after lunch (1:30PM), and one additional variable we were concerned about was our twisting tumbler, Lainey Fitch. She had been landing her ROBHSFull a few times earlier in the morning, but we weren’t sure if she was going to throw during the routine. We performed our routine twice for evaluations, and sure enough, Lainey hit her fulls SOLID both time. And the Jordan Challenge as accepted and HIT! The other cheer teams were very supportive, and many coaches came up to us and gave us many accolades.

After receiving another Blue Superior Ribbon, stress was off of the team, and onto the athletes trying out for All-American Cheerleaders. Westmont had great representation at the tryouts, and 6 of our athletes were selected. From JV we had Nova, Madison and Nikki selected. And from Varsity we had Mia, Angelina and Kaylee. This marked Mia’s 4th year in a row being awarded All-American! Way to go!

The night ended with the fun SPIRIT RALLY- CIRCUS Theme. The whole team dressed up, even Coach Amber and Coach Michelle. We had a lot of fun playing games, making machines out of our team, and learning new stunts for our football timeouts. The Spirit Rally ended with Spirit Sticks and we received a Day 3 Spirit Stick!

Day 4 Recap:

Rally Competition: 1st Place (Large Varsity)

Cheer Competition: 1st Place (Large Varsity)

Overall Game Day Competition: 2nd Place (Large Varsity)

Team Traditions Award (Plaque and Gatorade Cooler)

Spirit Stick!

USA Cheer Nationals 2019 - 4th in the Nation!

It is, with great pleasure, to announce that Westmont TCC Cheer has brought back their very first Nationals Trophy!! 4th Place!!

The ladies had an amazing performance!  They did everything we could have ever asked for and performed their hearts out.

I want to thank all of the athletes, parents and coaches for such a great, successful season!  Our track record was:

2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd (CCS), 4th (Nationals)

Also, USA (United Spirit Association) is the only Cheer Organization that is CIF sanctioned. So that means our 4th place is recognized in the official sport of TCC for California Interscholastic Federation.  UCA and NCA are not CIF sanctioned, yet.

These ladies have made leaps and bounds this whole season.  We, as a coaching staff, appreciate all of the athletes' hard work, and all the parents’ support and patience.  I am very aware that we expect so much from these ladies, even with 50% of them being Freshmen.  But with this exciting season under our belt, it has paved the way to new challenges and successes for the 2019-2020 season.

To the Seniors that will be leaving us, I want to THANK YOU for leading this team through a season of new achievements.

And to the returners for next year, continued greatness awaits, and is now in YOUR hands.  :)

Joshua Hadley took amazing pictures and video, that can be viewed here.

Thank you for an outstanding season!  You athletes have made coaches, parents, and school admin very proud.

GO WARRIORS!

UCA Cheer Camp 2018 (Day 3)

Greetings again from another high-pace day at UCA Cheer Camp!

DAY 3:

RALLY EVALUATION-GOLD RIBBON: SUPERIOR!

Today we had our Rally Evaluations.  With a slight hiccup from the night before, we re-arranged the routine with our Private Coach and perfected the pyramid we’ve been working so hard on.  Our Private Coach included some great transitions into the routine, and we pulled off another Gold Superior!  The team worked super hard in the morning, and had the routine nailed down by Lunch.  We gave them a long Lunch to recover and rest from a busy morning, and when we came back for Evals, we hit solid to receive that Gold Superior!  The team rewarded Erica Hadley with the Gold Ribbon, who knew the Rally Dance since Day 1 and has been teaching to all of the Freshmen and new members on Varsity.  Thank you for being so awesome, Erica!

ALL-AMERICAN:

All American Tryouts came right after the Lunch, and the first thing all the other teams noticed were our new uniforms.  :)  The uniforms look absolutely amazing!  We received many compliments.

From JV, we had Ashlyn Yee make All-American

From Varsity, both Erica Hadley and Mia Davis made All-American

Congratulations, ladies!

JUMP-OFF:

UCA only allowed 3 of our members compete in the Jump-Off today.  So we dwindled it down to Taylor Witana, Ashlyn Yee and Sav-Rose Turner.  They all competed in the Varsity Jump-Off division.  Taylor was up against some good Senior cheerleader competition, and unfortunately didn’t make it to the Finals.  Ashlyn and Sav-Rose were in the same row for Semi-Finals, and we were sure they wouldn’t take both to Finals.  To our surprise, UCA decided to take both of them to Finals!  In the end the competition was so close that the Varsity finalists had to perform a Toe-Touch, an Optional Jump, and a Double Jump.  Ashlyn Yee took home the Jump-Off Award, out of all of VARSITY CAMP!! Both Elite and Traditional Camps combined!  Way to go, Ashlyn!

SPACE RALLY:

UCA Camp ended Day 3 with the fun Space Rally, where all teams sit and cheer around the mats while playing Rally Games.  Kameron Madson and Coach Amber were paired up for a Coach + Member game.  The game was to shoot poms inside a hula hoop.  Kam was throwing the poms, Coach Amber was placing the hoop to get the poms to go through them.  Each school had a Coach + Member paired together and all schools competed against one another.  Westmont won!!  Congrats, Kam on your throwing skills! And Coach Amber on your hula hoop skills.

The Rally also included dressing up the Coaches the best Space Outfits, and then all of us Coaches had to walk down the “run-way” to show off our cute outfits.  We’re sure the team has great black-mail pics to use against us.  ;)

UCA Cheer Camp 2018 (Days 1+2)

Welcome to UCA Cheer Camp, Days 1 + 2!

DAY 1:

Thank you all for getting the team to UC Davis on time!  All the members got checked in, and were ready for a fun first day of UCA Cheer Camp!

On Day 1, the team learned a lot of material: sidelines, cheers and a few quick dances.

This cheer camp is split into TWO! There is a Traditional side of camp, and an Elite side of camp.  NOTE: We are in the Traditional side of camp.  There’s a lot of great teams here, traveling as far north as Oregon, and as down south as Los Angeles, CA.   The UCA Instructors are also from various areas.  The UCA Instructors are College Cheer Coaches from: SJSU, CSU-Sacramento, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Cal Poly-SLO.  There is a lot of talent here at camp, and the girls are soaking it all in!

SIDELINE EVALUATION-GOLD RIBBON: SUPERIOR!

The team learned 2 sideline cheers within 10 minutes! Then we choreographed quick stunts within the sidelines, and had our first evaluation, all within 30 minutes!! The girls worked quickly to learn the motions, and were able to hit crowd effective sideline stunts.  In the end, the team received their first GOLD SUPERIOR ribbon! Congratulations!

If the team receives all Superior ribbons (Gold or Blue) throughout all of their performances at Camp, they will receive a Superior-Game Day Trophy!!  We’re off to a great start!

On Day 1, we also received our 1st Spirit Stick!  Receiving a Spirit Stick means that the team has been rallying, having fun, and being friendly and energetic with the UCA Coaching Staff and other schools.  Although Day 1 was a little overwhelming for the new members, they managed to keep their spirits high and win this award!

Internal to Westmont: Each night, us coaches (Kelly, Lauren, Amber), gives the Spirit Stick to one member on the team.  This member is being recognized as someone that stood out to us personally on our team throughout the day.

For Day 1, we rewarded the Spirit Stick to Samantha Binns!!  With having the Spirit Stick, that member then has to take “care” of our school spirit by being responsible for the Spirit Stick until the next day, when we have to return the Spirit Stick back to UCA.  Then the process of being spirited continues for another day to hopefully earn another Spirit Stick.

DAY 2:

Today was a much more energetic day! The team started to understand the true essence of cheer camp, and really got themselves involved with being fun and crazy with the other cheer teams.

CHEER EVALUATION - GOLD RIBBON: SUPERIOR!

The morning portion was dedicated to fine-tuning the Cheer they learned on Day 1, adding stunts, signs, and poms.  Erica Hadley worked hard with all of the motions on the ground- perfecting every motion, and having the girls smile and yell the words loudly.  As for Stunts, all groups were having a bit of difficulty hitting stunts.  Our UCA instructor had suggested a new transition to our Cheer Stunts, and although the members were trying hard to hit them, motivation was starting to fall.  About 15 minutes before Lunch Break, we made a last minute change, with the very versatile Grace Rodhouse being able to stunt wherever and with whomever, and it seemed to make the stunts progress again.  We broke for lunch, with the hopes of returning to practice more energized and refreshed.  We returned to practice before our Cheer Eval with only 45 minutes to perfect the newly choreographed stunts.  The team did AMAZING! And received their 2nd Gold Ribbon (Superior)!!  We rewarded this Gold Ribbon to Grace, in appreciation of her can-do attitude and absolute core strength to make any and all stunts hit!

With the Cheer Evaluation complete, UCA Camp decided to have some members from all of camp (400+ cheerleaders) to show off their skills!  Mia Davis got on stage and performed her hula dancing! It was a great performance and UCA staff even included it in their SnapChat feed for all UCA Cheerleaders to see around the nation!  Very cute!

We ended the day with reviewing material, and enhancing our stunt pyramid for Day 3 (for the Rally-Dance routine).  The Rally routine used be known as the Xtreme Routine.  It is a dance, with a few 8-counts at the end to incorporate our pyramid we showed at the last Parent Meeting.  We are working hard to use the incorporations UCA Staff is suggesting.  <<Fingers crossed>>

Spirit Stick!

The team had such amazing spirit today! UCA Camp rewarded a Spirit stick to the Westmont Team, again!  Yayaya!  We as a Coaching team then rewarded the Spirit Stick to Ariana Rivera!!  Ariana had to learn how to be the front center Sign girl for the Cheer!  It was a huge responsibility to lead the crowd to say the words of the cheer and to be the first point of contact.  Great job!  She’s also expanding her stunting horizons from not only being a base, but a flyer, too!

Back at the Dorms…

We had the Room Decorations Contest tonight.  Each room decorated their room with a theme of their choice, and us coaches judged each of their rooms to see who were the most creative and original.

The team had a lot of fun in showing off their rooms, and definitely made us coaches laugh.  It took a while to get through all of the rooms, and by the time we were done, it was time for the members to be in their rooms, and no longer in the hallways.  So the winner of the Room Decorations Contest will be announced tomorrow morning.  :)

2017 Cheer Team

Congratulations, 2017-2018 Cheer Team!  Coach Sam and I are so excited to work with the new team, and have a great summer full of memories and new friendships!
